What are usability tests

Are the tool that YouCo uses to evaluate the effectiveness and user satisfaction of an application, website, or app by the usability specialist, using various methodologies.

Z

Why do them

  • They allow to identify problems in the user experience that result in failure to complete a procedure and consequently a loss of credibility of a product created by the disservice.
  • Through benchmarking, competitors’ products are examined and subjected to usability tests. The result is a collection of best practices useful for optimizing design time and costs.

When to do them?

  • Before a redesign, a fundamental step is to perform a usability test on the existing product because it provides various ideas necessary to reorient the design.
  • During the development phase of an app or any digital platform, it is necessary to verify user behavior and make any changes during the process.
  • During the experimental phase or in use, the focus should primarily be on the problems that the user encounters in usage and therefore redesign some components of the platform itself.

Methodology

Practical tests – Think aloud protocol

It is a technique used in usability tests with the aim of better understanding the choices and motivations that drive users to perform certain actions. The participants in the activity are encouraged to express thoughts, feelings, and opinions aloud during interaction with the product or service. The user is entrusted with a series of tasks to complete and through the Thinking Aloud protocol is encouraged to comment aloud on what they are doing. The researcher accompanying them during the activity has the task of asking some simple, clear, and open questions to delve into the choices made by the user and understand the cognitive process at work.
This technique is useful for revealing the mental paths that the user uses to perform the established tasks. Much information is obtained, otherwise not detectable, such as thoughts, expectations, and difficulties that the user encounters. Understanding the cognitive process is fundamental to comprehending the user’s mental map and usage habits.
Through Thinking Aloud, a series of qualitative insights are collected that integrate with the results of the usability test.

Heuristic Tests - Cognitive Walkthrough

It is a particular User Experience evaluation method based on a heuristic methodology, that is, carried out by professionals (UX RESEARCHERS) who put themselves in the users’ shoes. In our case, YouCo analyzes various aspects by dividing them into tasks and subtasks and applying specific questions to arrive at a precise and accurate simulation of user behavior and identify areas for improvement. The test is carried out by YouCo’s team of professionals (ux analyst and ux designer) with experience in usability evaluations, ergonomics, human-machine interaction, design thinking, personas, user journey, mobile app design.
