What are usability tests
They are the tool that YouCo uses to assess the effectiveness and satisfaction of use of an application, website or app. by the usability specialist, using different methodologies.
Why do you need to do them?
- Because they allow identifying the issues of the user experience that result in the failure to complete a procedure and consequently a loss of credibility of a product created by the disorganization.
- Thanks to benchmarking, competitors’ products are inspected and are subjected to usability tests. The result is a collection of best practices useful to optimize design time and costs.
When do you need to perform usability tests?
Before restyling, a fundamental step consists in carrying out usability testing on the existing product because it allows providing different ideas needed to reorient the design.
During the development stage of an app. or any digital platform, it is necessary to check user behavior and make any changes during the development stage
During the testing or use stage, it is necessary to focus primarily on the issues that the user experiences in the use and then redesign some components of the platform itself.
The methodologies used by YouCo
Practical testing – Think aloud protocol
It is a technique that is used in usability tests with the aim of better understanding the choices and motivations that drive the user to perform specific actions. Participants in the activity are encouraged to express aloud thoughts, feelings and opinions during interaction with the product or service. The user is entrusted with a series of tasks to be completed and through the Thinking Aloud protocol is stimulated to comment aloud on what it is doing. The researcher who supports the user during the activity has the task to ask some questions, simple, clear and open, to deepen the choices made by the user and understand the cognitive process in place.
This technique is useful to discover the mental pathways that the user uses to carry out the established tasks. A lot of information is obtained, otherwise undetectable, for example thoughts, expectations and difficulties that the user experiences. Understanding the cognitive process is essential to understand the users’ mental map and their habits of use.
Through the Thinking Aloud a series of qualitative insights are collected and integrated with the results of the usability test.
Heuristic tests – Cognitive walk-through
It is a particular User Experience assessment method based on a heuristic methodology, i.e. carried out by professionals (UX RESEARCHER) who identify themselves with users. In our case YouCo analyzes the various aspects by subdividing them into tasks and sub-tasks and applying specific questions in order to obtain a precise and accurate simulation of user behavior and identify margins for improvement. The test is carried out by the team of professionals of YouCo (ux analyst and ux designer) with experience on usability, ergonomics, human-machine interaction, design thinking, personas, user journey, mobile app design.
